It’s Talk Energy Week!

When it comes to energy, there’s always lots to talk about—and Talk Energy Week is a great time to do it.

Let's Talk Energy is a national program that aims to enhance energy awareness among Canadians to contribute to a more sustainable energy future. The Talk Energy Week website features helpful resources for teachers, interactive games for both children and adults, and other educational information to help those in the Fredericton area and beyond better understand energy.

One of the best tools for New Brunswickers who want to become more energy-efficient is NB Power's Home Energy Report. This free service provides great insight! Get monthly reports on your home's energy use and compare it with similar homes in your area. You'll see how your home's energy use changes over time and across seasons, and you'll discover real-world ways to save energy—and save money.

Every day Canadians use different forms of energy for their comfort, convenience, and enjoyment. Electricity allows us to heat and cool our homes, and power the lights and appliances that help us work, play, and live. Here are some simple ways to save money on energy at home:

  • Invest in a heat pump—perfect for staying warm in the winter and cool in the summer
  • Consider installing programmable/smart thermostats
  • Get in the habit of turning lights off when you leave a room
  • Fit external lights with a motion sensor
  • Use energy-saving light bulbs such as LEDs

As always, don't hesitate to contact a licensed and insured electrician such as Current Solutions Electrical to help achieve your energy-efficiency goals.

Light Up Your Love Life

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, which has many people preparing to “set the mood” at home. Lighting has one of the greatest impacts on setting the mood. Here are a couple ways lights can help you get romance ready:

Dim the Lights

When lights are dimmed low, the room becomes softer, more inviting, and immediately more comfortable. Dim lights elicit a calming quality, helping decrease stress and make everyone feel at ease.

Heat Things Up with Warm Tones

The other factor at play when setting the mood with lighting is colour temperature. Colour temperature is a unit of measure for absolute temperature that is expressed in kelvins (K).

Color temperatures over 5000 K are called cool colors (bluish white), while lower colour temperatures (2700–3000 K) are called warm colors (yellowish-white through red). The choice is a question of personal preference, but warm colours are usually more romantic because they mimic the cozy, warm light of candlelight.

A qualified electrician can help you put these simple ideas into action. Consider installing dimmer switches in your bedroom, dining room, and/or living room. This allows you to have total control over the brightness to create the perfect mood. Wall sconces are another way to add soft lighting at home.

Don’t fret too much though. Everyone knows the real magic happens when the lights go out!

See Your Home in a New Light

There’s nothing like a new year to get your home (and your life) in good shape. You can change the whole atmosphere of your home just by careful use of lighting. By swapping out old, dated light fixtures for new, modern lighting, you can transform both the functionality and the mood of the rooms within your home. Whether it’s illuminating task areas such as kitchen counters or desk surfaces or enhancing relaxation with mood lighting, Current Solutions Electrical can help.

Here are some bright ideas for your home:

Entryway – Sometimes called a mudroom or a foyer, this room is the first thing you, your family, and every guest sees when entering the house. The right lighting helps create a warm, welcoming feeling—and a good first impression for visitors. It also serves a practical function by providing more light in what is often a dimly-lit area.

Kitchen – The kitchen is the heart of any home. It’s where food is regularly prepared, so kitchen space needs to be properly lit so the cook can see. Lighting should be utilitarian and task-oriented. Under-cabinet lighting is a fantastic way to brighten this area of the home.

Dining room – Whether it’s a weekday family supper or a lavish dinner party, a good dining room is one that allows everyone to enjoy a delicious meal together. Strategically placed track lighting or a beautiful pendant/chandelier directly over the table will ensure people can see their food—and each other. This can encourage conversation, lighting up the faces of those around the table.

Bathroom – Depending on the layout of the room and the mood you want to create, many electrical improvements can be made to your bathroom to make it more comfortable, modern, and efficient.  Heated flooring, new lights (a shower light for example), and bathroom fans are just some of the electrical elements that Current Solutions Electrical has installed in homes around Fredericton.

Living room – Like the name suggests, this room is meant to be lived in! It’s likely where you spend the majority of your leisure time and entertain guests, so it makes sense to make it comfortable. Lighting in living rooms should be easily controllable (pro tip: dimmer switches allow you to adjust the lighting perfectly). It’s also a room that typically requires many outlets to power electrical devices; Current Solutions Electrical’s electrician can safely re-wire these outlets so that they are better placed for your convenience.

Bedroom – Your bedroom should feel like a sanctuary. It’s where you go to unwind and relax, and yet too many people step into a floodlit room at the end of the day, which can disrupt sleep. Lamps or wall lights are a great alternative to overhead lighting. Consider adding better lighting in your closets too so you can easily find what you need to get ready. Readers, be sure to invest in good lighting so you don’t hurt your eyes. TV lovers, we can wire your bedroom to power a flat screen television.

Lastly, consider the outside of your home. Adding lighting around your property illuminates your home at night to deter burglars. Whether it’s motion-sensing lights, spotlights, photo-cells (to turn on your lights as soon as it gets dark), or path lights so you and guests have an easier time navigating the walk to your doorway in the dark, outdoor home lighting is always a good investment.

Current Solutions Electrical can bring any of these ideas to light.

Stay Cozy at Home with a Heat Pump

It's that time of year again: the temperatures are dropping and that means rising heating costs are on New Brunswickers' minds.

The decision to install a heat pump is based primarily on staying warm at an affordable price - although no one would deny these units make a great air conditioning alternative for the hot months.

Alas, a cold winter stands between Fredericton residents and summer 2017.

Here's the good news:  Heat pumps have lower annual heating energy costs than both electric baseboards and oil furnaces. They use far less electricity to produce the same amount of heat.

Ductless mini split heat pumps could be the answer to staying warm & toasty this winter in Fredericton. By investing in a heat pump (aka a HVAC unit), you can save hundreds of dollars per year!
